Moving from a Custom GPT to a plugin? Here's what you can transfer, what needs rebuilding, and how to preserve more complex systems that use GPT Actions, MCP, private knowledge and authentication.
Simple Custom GPTs may be straightforward to migrate. More advanced ones can depend on external services, authentication, specific instructions and persistent data. Those integrations must be identified and tested; transferring the text alone may not reproduce the original behaviour.
Step-by-step migration
Save its instructions, important Knowledge files, expected outputs, example conversations, custom Actions and the services they call. Record the user permissions it needs.
If you're the GPT creator and the option is available, open My GPTs → Created by me → Migrate to plugin. Check the resulting private plugin before sharing it.
Review the generated plugin skill and its reference files. Confirm that the key guidance and source material are present and usable in the new environment.
GPT Actions don't automatically migrate. Where required, replace the old OpenAPI operations with a supported app or an MCP server that calls the original backend securely.
Compare ordinary requests, difficult cases, tool calls, permissions, error handling and outputs. Check both successful and rejected operations using an appropriate test account.
Confirm the plugin's permissions and connected services, then share it with its intended users. Public directory listing is a separate approval process where applicable.
For technical Custom GPTs
A Custom GPT Action typically defines an operation in an OpenAPI schema, then makes an HTTP request to your service. A custom MCP server can expose an equivalent tool, validate its inputs, call that service and return the result in a format the plugin can use.
OpenAPI operation → authenticated HTTP request → API response.
May include API keys, OAuth, specific request fields and backend permissions.
Plugin skill → MCP tool → validated backend request → structured tool response.
Authentication, access limits, parameter mappings and failure handling must be tested—not assumed.
Important: A working plugin package is not the same as a working MCP connection. Server availability, permissions and tool behaviour need separate verification.
